Types of Hernias in Men & What You Can Do About Them

People of all ages and genders can get a hernia. Yet, more than 90% of all hernias occur in men. An abdominal wall hernia is the most common type of hernia. There are different reasons why abdominal hernias appear, and each of them requires a different treatment.

Let’s take a look at the most prevalent types of hernias in men, their signs, and what you should do if you have one.

What Is a Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or another body part pushes through the muscle or tissue that contains it. Most hernias appear in the abdominal cavity area, between the hips and the chest. However, some of them can appear in the upper thigh and groin areas too.

Hernias might occur as a result of:

  • Coughing
  • Exercising
  • Straining
  • Lifting heavy things
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Aging
  • Excessive weight
  • Post-surgery or injury damage
  • Congenital condition
  • Fluid in the abdomen

In most cases, hernias aren’t dangerous for your life, but sometimes surgery is required to prevent complications.

What Are the Symptoms of a Hernia?

Hernia in the abdomen or groin area usually looks like a lump or bulge visible when you laugh, cough, or strain, and it disappears when you lie down. Nevertheless, here are some other symptoms that might indicate you have a hernia and require medical assistance:

  • Pain while picking up heavy objects
  • Swelling in the groin area
  • Pain in the hernia site
  • Signs of bowel obstruction
  • Heartburn or difficulty swallowing
  • Fever
  • A bulge turned red or purple
  • Nausea
  • Chest pain

Different Types of Hernias in Men

The name of a hernia corresponds to its location on the body. These are the four most common types of hernias that occur in men:

1. Inguinal Hernias

Inguinal hernias usually appear in the lower abdomen. In this case, the intestine or the bladder bulges through the abdominal wall or into the groin's inguinal canal. This type of hernia is the most commonly found in men.

Solution: some of the inguinal hernias can be pushed back on their own, but some require a repair surgery

2. Umbilical Hernias

Even though most umbilical hernias occur in babies, they still can appear in adult men. Usually, they’re caused by a congenital defect in the navel that happens during birth. This type of hernia might not be visible until weight gain or other factors that occur later in life.

Solution: some small hernia lumps can disappear by themselves, but some might require immediate surgical interference

3. Incisional Hernias

Incisional hernias aren’t as common as inguinal ones, but they’re much more dangerous. This type of hernia might occur weeks, months, and even years after open surgery in the abdominal area. Incisional hernias don’t heal on their own. If not addressed on time, the repair procedure might become very complicated.

Solution: the repair surgery

4. Hiatal Hernias

Hiatal hernias occur internally and aren’t visible from the outside. In this case, the upper part of the stomach pushes through a hole (hiatus) in the diaphragm. It usually causes problems with acid reflux or heartburn. Some are born with this type of hernia, and some develop it with age.

Solution: a surgery might be required to treat hiatal hernias

How to Prevent Hernias?

Sometimes, it’s not possible to prevent hernias from developing or reoccurring, yet there are still a few things you can introduce into your lifestyle to avoid getting a hernia.

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Refrain from lifting heavy objects
  • Try wearing a Hernia Belt for Men if you had the reposition of an inguinal hernia
  • Try not to strain
  • Work on strengthening the abdominal muscles
  • If you struggle to work out or complete your exercise training, try using Hernia Truss Underwear for Men
  • Follow a healthy and balanced diet full of high-fiber foods to prevent constipation

Most hernias aren’t life-threatening and don’t cause long-term problems. However, it’s always worth talking to your doctor if you notice any weird symptoms or changes in your body.
